Anti-wrinkle injections are the most popular non-surgical treatment performed not only in our Skin Atelier clinics, but in the world. They are a quick, relatively pain-free treatment with minimal risks and downtime, and they deliver dramatic yet natural-looking results which lasts for months. At Skin Atelier, your anti-wrinkle injection treatment is performed by our highly trained Cosmetic Nurses or by Dr Turner himself personally.
At Skin Atelier by Dr Turner we use only premium brand Botulinum Toxin Type A. Unfortunately due to Australian regulations, we are not allowed to name the drugs used, however if you wish to discuss what products we offer, please phone 1300 437 758 and one of our friendly staff can discuss this with you.
How do Anti-Wrinkle injections work?
Botulinum toxin type A is a muscle relaxant that is injected using a fine needle into the facial muscles. The toxin blocks the message from the nerve to the muscle, reducing the amount of contraction of that muscle causing reduced appearance of lines and wrinkles. These wrinkles form by the repeated contraction of facial muscles under the skin which are important in our facial expressions. Therefore, dynamic wrinkles appear in the areas of the face that have a lot of daily movement, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, around the eyes, the chin, and above the lip. Over time with the natural decrease of important elements in the skin like collagen and hyaluronic acid, these dynamic wrinkles become deeper and permanent.
The anti-wrinkle injection treatment works by injecting a small amount of muscle relaxant or botulinum toxin type A into the specific facial muscles which are causing the dynamic wrinkles. After the treatment, the underlying facial muscle gradually becomes weaker over time, and the overlying skin is rested, allowing it to smooth out naturally, and wrinkles and lines to soften.
Is it safe for me to have anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle injectables have been approved for cosmetic use in Australia since 2002. Since then, over 15 million people have been treated. It is one of the most widely researched medicines in the world, with decades of data and a strong safety profile. That said, we understand if you still have concerns, and we are happy to answer all your questions prior to your treatment. In terms of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, anti-wrinkle injections are widely considered to be the lowest risk procedure.
Possible risks and side effects include;
- Bruising and swelling at injection site – very common
- Headache following injection for 24-48 hours – less common
- Eyebrow/eyelid droops – rare
- Repeat treatment to achieve desired result
- Blurred vision – temporary and very rare.
- Flu like symptoms – uncommon
Am I suitable for anti-wrinkle injections?
During your initial consultation with your Cosmetic Injector, we will develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your specific concerns and aesthetic goals and determine your suitability. The best results are achieved in patients with good skin quality, and dynamic wrinkles, but patients with poor quality skin, and deep static lines and wrinkles can also achieve amazing results following ongoing treatment. Setting realistic goals, and utilizing the many other treatments available at Skin Atelier, including implementing a physician only skincare routine, and attending regular laser treatments will assist in achieving optimal results in patients with aged skin, and deep static wrinkles.
What areas can be treated?
Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used to address:
• Forehead lines – horizontal lines on forehead
• Frown lines – vertical lines between eyebrows
• Crow’s feet – lines around the eyes
Additional areas that can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections:
• Non-Surgical Brow lift – Selective placement around the eye and forehead to get 1-2 mm lift of the lateral eyebrow
• Gummy Smiles – Specific placement to weaken the lip elevators and often combined with dermal fillers to the lips can enhance and balance your smile
• Mouth lines – Very small dose placed close to the lip line can minimise radial lip lines from developing
• Bunny lines – Small dose can minimise lines on the side of the nose occurring with smiling
• Jawline – Injecting larger doses into the masseter muscle can produce a slimmer, feminine jawline. While injecting small doses to the chin crease can elongate the chin.
While the previously listed anti-wrinkle injections are widely known for their cosmetic benefits, they have many other benefits in treating numerous medical problems. Among these are excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis and migraines.
How long will the anti wrinkle injections last?
The results for anti-wrinkle treatments have full effect for about 3 months. After 4 months you may start to see movement of the underlying muscles again and the reoccurrence of dynamic wrinkles. With ongoing maintenance of anti-wrinkle injection treatments, due to the long-term weakening of the facial muscles the duration of effect can easily extend up to 6 months before repeat treatment is needed. Most patients choose to have repeat treatment at 3-4 months, however this varies between patients. Some males, heavy exercisers and those who are more muscular, may tend to require larger and more frequent doses.
What can I expect during treatment?
After your initial consultation and facial assessment, the treatment areas are carefully marked with an eyeliner pencil. Prior to the treatment, we cleanse the skin with an alcohol wipe, and use some ice for a few minutes to numb the skin prior to the injection of the product using a small ultra-fine syringe. In some clients that are sensitive or may be anxious about the procedure, we can apply local anaesthetic numbing cream to the area 40 minutes prior to your treatment to make the treatment completely pain free.
The individual injections only take a few moments to complete and the total session is generally only 20 minutes.
When can I expect results?
After your treatment, you will start to notice the movement of the treated muscles weakening over the first few days. By 2 weeks the full effect of the anti-wrinkle injection treatment is attained. We review patients at this time to check they are satisfied with the results and don’t require a top-up to adjust the result. After your anti-wrinkle injections, within days the lines and wrinkles will begin to smooth and the results will continue to improve over the coming months. You should experience little discomfort and will be able to resume normal activities soon after. With ongoing maintenance treatments, you can prevent further wrinkles from developing and reverse existing lines and maintaining a youthful appearance. With ‘millennials’ now seeking treatment in their twenties and thirties to completely avoid the development of permanent deep lines developing to start with.
What can I expect following treatment?
While some redness or blebs may be seen at the site of injection, it usually dissipates within one hour. Occasionally a small bruise may develop, especially around the thin eyelid skin. This can be easily camouflaged with some light mineral makeup the following day. You are able to return immediately to normal work or social activities, however, heavy exercise needs to be avoided for the remainder of the day. Following treatment, it is important to avoid rubbing of treatment area, and lying flat for 6 hours to prevent the spread of the muscle relaxant into other unintended areas.
